In the second half, you can really see why this was the first blockbuster. One final observation: apparently, the chariot equivalent of stepping on the gas is whipping and whipping and whipping your horses This was an American film version of the story - unfortunately does not follow the book in certain areas - The main character is supposed to be a Roman with certain habits that were probably improper to be shown in s America - Peter Ustinov steals the movie with his portrayal of Nero - Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr as the star crossed lovers and Michael Rennie as the Apostle Paul.

Wer auf diese alten Monumentalfilme steht, den nostalgischen Charme dieser Filme genauso liebt wie ich, der sollte sich "Quo Vadis" unbedingt ansehen - ich finde ihn grandios!

Auch alte Schinken aus den 50er-Jahren kann man perfekt aufarbeiten: siehe Cleopatra. Bei dieser "Ultra-Resolution-Abtastung" muss ein Schimpanse die Regler bedient haben oder gar niemand.
Ansonsten befindet sich die Scheibe in einer Standard-Amaray-Box. Dort begegnet er der lygischen Geisel Lygia, die von Plautius und seiner Frau als Tochter erzogen wurde.
Im Haus des Generals lernt er auch einen gewissen Paulus aus Tarsus kennen. Nach der Feier soll Lygia in das Haus des Petronius gebracht werden, kommt aber nie an.
Sie bleibt verschwunden. Dann bringt Ursus den bewusstlosen Marcus in ein christliches Haus, wo dieser, unter anderem von Lygia, gesund gepflegt wird.
Als er wieder zu sich kommt, gesteht ihm Lygia ihre Liebe. Marcus ist bereit, pro forma Lygias Glauben anzunehmen; dies lehnt Lygia jedoch entschieden ab, da er den christlichen Glauben noch nicht versteht und schon gar nicht danach lebt.
Nero wiederum, feige und voller Angst um sein Leben, braucht jemanden, dem er die Schuld an der Brandkatastrophe zuschieben kann. Marcus, inzwischen in Ungnade gefallen, wird ebenfalls gefasst und landet in derselben Zelle.
Nach dem Brand hatte der Apostel Petrus Rom verlassen. Daran erkennt Petrus, dass er eigentlich bei seiner Gemeinde in Rom sein sollte, und kehrt um.
Petronius hat inzwischen beschlossen, sich selbst umzubringen, um Nero zuvorzukommen. Ursus soll sie verteidigen. Mervyn Le Roy. Sa prestation est impeccable.

Ottimi tutti gli altri interpreti, con una riserva per Robert Taylor. Non dico rispetto al romanzo soltanto, ma anche alla coerenza dello stesso film, salvo i momenti di dolcezza sempre un po' forzata.

Vinicius dashes madly on horseback to the city, in tortured anxiety for Lygia; the trans-Tiber region of the city where Lygia resides has not yet been reached by the fire; with the help of Chilo who now reappears having broken his promise not to spy on the Christians , he finds Lygia and Peter sheltering in a quarry-man's hut outside the city; here, with outraged multitudes rioting outside, and gladiators and escaped slaves killing and pillaging, Vinicius who has meanwhile been converted by Paul vows never to desert them, and Peter baptizes him on the spot.
Nero meantime returns to Rome, where he sings his poem before the outraged multitude, which believes him to be the author of the calamity; Petronius however restores the situation by riding into the crowd who idolize him for his reputed humanity , and promising them extraordinary gifts of "bread and circuses" in the name of Caesar.
But as Nero remains unpopular, Tigellinus , Caesar's praetorian Prefect, advocates finding a scapegoat for the disaster; in the middle of the convocation, in which various candidates are suggested including Tigellinus himself, who rebuffs the suggestion with a vailed threat Tigellinus is called away, and returns to with the suggestion that the Christians fulfill that office; it emerges that Chilo, still furious from his flogging by Vinicius, has come forward to accuse them of the crime; Petronius, Tigellinus' longstanding rival for influence over Nero, protests, but is overridden by Poppaea, who hates Lygia for her beauty, and Vinicius for spurning her.
Petronius leaves with the certainty that he has irrecoverably lost his influence over Nero, and is therefore almost certainly doomed to death. Immediately on returning home, Petronius warns Vinicius of Lygia's danger; but before he reaches her, she is seized by soldiers, informed of her hiding place by Chilo; with the latter's contrivance, multitudes of other Christians are imprisoned, and Nero plans a series of games in the arena featuring their deaths to divert unpopularity from himself.
During a whole series of ghastly exhibitions, including devouring by wild beasts, butchery by gladiators, and finally burning them on crosses by nighttime to illuminate a luxurious banquet in Caesar's gardens open to all Rome, Vinicius attempts unsuccessfully to rescue Lygia from prison.
Meanwhile, Chilo who since informing has been raised to the rank of an Augustinian suffers the pains of a tormented conscience while watching the undeserved sufferings of the Christians in the arena, though they had repeatedly pardoned him for the severest crimes; at the last show, when he encounters Glaucus yet alive on one of the crosses, who again forgives him, Chilo breaks down, and accuses Caesar before the crowd of being the incendiary; the court scatters, and Paul emerges from the confusion to promise him salvation if he perseveres in his repentance; this gives him the fortitude to later die unperjured in the arena when he refuses to retract his accusation of the emperor.
Meanwhile, the final games come around, in which Lygia and Ursus are exposed in the arena to an aurochs ; however, Ursus with his preternatural strength breaks the beast's neck; the crowd, glutted with the slaughter of innocents, demands of Caesar to spare the pair, and Nero acquiesces out of cowardice; Vinicius and Lygia marry and settle on his estates in Sicily, where they live unprosecuted as Christians.
Jesus says, "If thou desertest my people, I am going to Rome to be crucified a second time", which shames Peter into going back to Rome to accept martyrdom.
Sienkiewicz alludes to several historical events and merges them in his novel, but some of them are of doubtful authenticity. Playwright-actor-manager Wilson Barrett produced his successful play The Sign of the Cross in the same year as publication of Quo vadis?
The play was first performed 28 March In both, a Roman soldier named Marcus falls in love with a Christian woman and wishes to "possess" her.

Lead actor Robert Taylor is average at best, lead actress Deborah Kerr is better Sitting through this is a little like being in a Sunday School class, with the filmmakers presenting the story of early Christianity as a solemn procession of painstaking martyrdom and redemption.
The persecution of Christians by the Romans is definitely intense to witness, but in contrast, you have a deadly dull romance that's also grossly misogynistic at times.
It's a movie that does not play well today and when certain lines of dialogue are spoken, you'll know why. It's a big, splashy Technicolor epic filled to the brim with spectacle and color.
Though, at its heart, it's really just a stealth remake of Cecil B. Demille's "Sign of the Cross" which is a wonderfully bonkers s sword and sandal epic that pushes the envelope for the time with the amount of skin on display and the vividness of its lurid violence Quo Vadis is unmistakably an epic film, and while its early 50s sense of theatricality and melodrama might turn people off, it is still an extraordinarily accomplished film.
Here's a film that not only feels big, it looks it too. While the conflict in the story is certainly interesting enough to hold your attention, the spectacle is the star.

One of the first epics that Hollywood produced with blockbusting regularity from the '50s through to the '60s, Quo Vadis is also one of the dullest.
Whilst it's enlivened by the wide eyed and bovine Ustinov as Nero, burning Rome for his song, it's a performance sometimes at odds with the plodding, clean cut portrayals around him.
Still I'm glad it's there. Ultimately, Hollywood would go on to perfect the formula with the likes of Ben-Hur. Quo Vadis is a paint-by-numbers Technicolor historical epic clearly made solely for monetary gain and Oscar clout.
The lead characters are blank slates with a deeply upsetting and poorly constructed romance, one that gets entirely too much contrived effort and screen time, and the side characters are substantially more interesting.
The film's one glimmer of female desire in Eunice was a welcome change of pace from the abduction "romance" of the leads, and Peter Ustinov carries the entire film on his back with his strangely endearing and fully magnetic Nero.
Unfortunately, with a wretched villain so perfectly acted and explored and a lead duo so stagnant and boring, it's hard to root for anyone here.
Spartacus takes Quo Vadis's at times interesting set design and lavish effects and Ustinov and adds a legitimately good story, just watch that instead.
We see burning structures collapsing on masses. We see people burned at the stake. We see lions in the Colosseum ambush huddled families and rip them apart.
That Colosseum sequence is an all-timer for nightmares. For it must have felt like a Mel Gibson film. The putting of cruel and unusual violence into your head that you likely never imagined before.
Like lions tearing you apart. I imagine Quo Vadis scarred many a child's head but also opened their imagination to new worlds.
QUO VADIS is as spectacular as any other mega-buck Roman epic with huge sets and hoards of extras, replete with the requisite howlers in the script but it's a lot more entertaining than most thanks mainly to an Oscar-nominated performance from Peter Ustinov as Nero.
Ustinov was sufficiently canny an actor to know he was in a major money-spinner, however terrible, and that it would do his career no harm at all if he hammed it up just a little.
The stars were Robert Taylor as a Roman centurion and Deborah Kerr as the Christian girl he falls for; they're decorative in the grand Hollywood style but it's left to Ustinov and Leo Genn, as a decent Roman senator who….
Riotously entertaining often quite droll and stunning to look at. Finlay Currie also commands the screen for the best filmed sermon not performed by JC.
Genn, Laffan, Kerr, all beautiful and talented. Mervyn LeRoy is a master. How ironic that this line in the film is applied to Nero trying to pin the burning of Rome on Christians which is dubious historically , and not on the idea that a man walked on water and rose from the dead.
He has no empathy for the masses or for the minority religions and literally plays music while his city burns. Hmm who does he remind me of? I could never.
